Whether you agree with what Snowden did or not, I think this interview John Oliver did with him on Last Week Tonight is absolutely critical viewing.
Agree or disagree with the leaking of the NSA documents, the fact the interview put it in terms that the layperson can understand is vital.
Yes, the “dick pics”, “sexting”, and “phone sex” scenario was played for laughs, but the reality is that most people can understand that. Most people don’t understand the technical side of surveillance or cyber security. I do, but I actually studied computer science at one point in my life.
I think it’s really important that people understand what this could potentially mean for them on a personal level. Because like John Oliver said, multiple times, people just don’t give a shit about foreign surveillance. They have to understand it on a personal level. I care about foreign surveillance, but I come from a military family, so maybe it’s just that I understand it on a more personal level, and how that foreign surveillance can actually impact my family.
And I think Australian’s really need to watch this. Because this is what’s going to happen as a result of those new metadata laws that were just passed in parliament.
Seriously, I know it’s a half hour long video, but it’s absolutely worth the watch. Plus, it’s John Oliver, so it’s funny at the same time.
