The Australian government (read: Abbott and Brandis) have been talking about wanting to collect and store metadata about people’s communications. Not the content of the communications – “just the metadata” they say!

It’s very Orwellian, isn’t it? Disturbingly reminiscent of Nineteen Eighty Four.
Discussing this on Facebook, one of my friends made the comment “what next? barcode tattoos?“. I know this person was being tongue in cheek, but let this not be case of “…just a little bit of history repeating.” I suspect my friend isn’t entirely ignorant of history, but perhaps didn’t realise that this isn’t a novel idea.
We don’t need to look too far in the past to remind ourselves of POW’s being branded with serial numbers.
I’m kind of creeped out by the whole thing to be brutally honest. And it takes me quite a bit to get creeped out.
